You need to understand the purpose of your written text.  This step is important for you to seek the right approach and direction because it would allow you to think of the appropriate words and style of presenting your thoughts when you know the nature of your written text and whom you are writing to.  This definitely helps you to express yourself clearly in order to create the right context of tone, formality type and information.

Most of the time, learners tend to start writing quickly without even giving themselves the momentary pause of knowing exactly what they intend to write about.
