Key Areas of Focus on Oral Reading Skills:

1.   Intonation

2.   Rhythm

3.   Pitch

4.   Reading Audibly

5.   Suitable Reading Pace

Avoid the following when Reading:

1.   Reading too fast as you may unnecessarily introduce new words or skip words

2.   Being nervous as you may stammer unintentionally

3.   Reading to yourself as it may be too soft for the examiner to hear

4.   Avoid reading in monotone as it may not sound interesting without the appropriate

      level of intonation

5.   Pause for too long as it reflects lack of fluency in your reading

6.   Avoid difficult words as it demonstrates inability in pronunciation - always make an

      attempt to try

Tips for Parents:  Ways to help your child in reading practice

1.   Model Reading:  Be the one to read to your child first thus allowing your child

      to listen attentively to understand the important aspects of reading

2.   Choose passages that allow your child to apply the key areas of focus as listed above

3.   Allow your child to listen to fluent speakers or readers as role models

4.   Compliment your child wherever possible

5.   Make adjustments to your child's reading 'on the spot' for corrective reading

6.   Record your child's reading and then play it back to provide feedback and

      acquire 'buy-in' to improve further
